How we protect your privacy

Mahayom is designed for quiet daily use that respects your privacy. This document describes, in plain language, what data we see, what we do with it, and - more importantly - what we never touch.

What stays on your device

• Your settings: the language you picked in the app, nusach, calculation method, your location (GPS coordinates or a city you picked manually), notification preferences.
• Scheduled reminder history, computed locally from your settings.
• Home screen widget data, prepared on-device for display (and copied to your own paired Apple Watch, if you have one, for its app and watch face).
• Names and dates of passing that you add.

All of this lives in local storage on your device. None of it is sent to any server, and we have no way to see it.

The Family Purity tracker

If you use the Family Purity tracker, your dates and marks are held in the device's secure storage. They open only after Face ID, a fingerprint, or the device passcode. They are not synced to iCloud or to any other cloud, they never reach our servers, and we have no way to see them. If you delete the tracker, they are removed from the device.

Your location

If you grant GPS permission, your precise coordinates are stored only on your device. They are used to compute halachic times, to order the mikvaot and synagogues by what is closest to you, and to aim the compass at the Kotel. All of those run on the device itself against lists stored on it, and the coordinates are never transmitted anywhere. If you prefer, you can pick a city manually in Settings instead of GPS, and the device's location service is never queried.

If your place is automatic and you allowed location "Always" (on Android "Allow all the time"), the app also uses your location when it is closed. When you travel far, the phone wakes the app in the background. It updates the place, recalculates the times, the reminders and the Shabbat alarm, and updates the widget and your Apple Watch, if you have one. It keeps no record of your route, only the latest place, which also stays only on your device and is never sent anywhere. You can stop this at any time by picking a city manually in the app, or in the phone's location settings.

Important to mention: any network request (like with any app or website) exposes your IP address, from which Google's and Meta's servers can infer your general area, such as the country or the city - never your street address. This is not your precise GPS location, which stays on your device.

What goes over the network

1. Basic usage measurement. So we know how many people actually use the app and can prioritize fixes, we measure basic actions through Firebase Analytics (a Google service): how many times the app is opened, which screens were viewed, and how long each interaction took. Google gives each installation a random ID that is not tied to your name, email or phone (on iPhone, Google also gets the ID that Apple gives to all apps of one developer) - we have no user accounts and no way to identify you personally. Google receives your IP address on each request (as in any network call) and infers your general area from it, such as the country or the city. We see aggregate numbers, not individuals.

2. Update check. Once a day, the app checks for updates. If your installed version is too old (for example, due to a halacha calculation bug that was fixed), the app will prompt you to update from the store. The check sends only technical details, such as the app version, the language and the time zone.

3. Silent pushes for widget refresh. Firebase Cloud Messaging (operated by Google) assigns your device a registration token on first install. We use this token to send a silent push twice a day asking the app to recompute widget data. The push itself contains no visible payload and does not appear in your notification center.

4. Crash reports. If something in the app crashes or hits an error, an automatic report is sent to Firebase Crashlytics (a Google service). The report includes your device model, operating system version, what the app was doing when it crashed, and a random installation ID that is not tied to your name, email or phone. It has no name, no email and no precise location. We use it only to know what to fix.

5. Measuring our ads. We advertise Mahayom on Facebook and Instagram. To know whether these ads bring people to the app, the app uses Meta App Events (a service of Meta, the company behind Facebook). It tells Meta when the app is installed, when it is opened and when you leave it, and how long it stayed open. With each event, Meta receives basic device details, such as the model, system version, language, time zone, screen size, mobile carrier and storage size, a random ID that the app creates for Meta, and your IP address. Meta's code in the app starts only when you open the app, and it may then also contact Meta to get its settings. It never starts when the app only wakes in the background, for example to update the widget or the times after a trip. After you leave the app, it may still finish sending Meta what it collected while the app was open. If Meta's own code in the app crashes, Meta also gets a crash report. On Android, Meta also learns which store installed the app and, if you came from one of our ads, which ad it was. On Android 10 and older, if the Facebook app is on the phone, Meta also gets an ID from the Facebook app, so it can tell which ad led to the install. Meta never gets your precise location, your prayers, your reminders or the Family Purity tracker. The app asks Meta to use this data only for statistics and to measure our ads, not to target ads at you. We do not use your device's advertising ID, and on iPhone the app does not ask for permission to track you. Meta handles this data under Meta's privacy policy.

In all five of these, we do not know who you are. We have no user accounts, no name, no email, no phone number. We see usage as totals. Crash reports reach us one by one, with the technical details above, but never with your name, email or phone number.

What we do NOT do

• We do not collect personal details: no name, no email, no phone number, no address.
• We do not display ads in the app. The only advertising service we use is Meta App Events, described above, and it only measures our own ads.
• We do not follow what you do in other companies' apps and websites, and we do not build advertising profiles.
• We do not sell data to third parties. Period.
• We do not share data with anyone other than Google (Firebase) and Meta, as described above.

Notifications

All scheduled reminders (up to 68 events per day) are scheduled and delivered by your device's operating system - iOS or Android - without our knowledge. We precompute the times and hand them to iOS/Android to fire at the appropriate moment.

Children

The app is age-rated 4+. It has no age-gated content, no user-generated content, no messaging features, and no social interaction. We do not knowingly collect any data from children.

Keeping and deleting data

Deleting the app stops everything described above. If you use the Family Purity tracker, delete it in the app first, so its data is removed from the device. Data already sent is kept by Google for a limited time, and by Meta under its own policy. The IDs described above are random and the app does not show them, so we cannot find one person's data to delete it. Meta lets you see and clear data that apps sent about you, in your Facebook or Instagram settings, under your activity off Meta technologies. Policy changes

If we update this policy, the date at the top will change. Material changes are also listed in the store release notes.
